The largest motor yacht ever built in Britain, M.Y. Vava II at 96 metres has now sailed for the Caribbean for the enjoyment of its owner Ernesto Bertarelli who received the yacht earlier this month.
This extraordinary yacht was built in Appledore and then relocated to the Plymouth royal Dockyard where it was fitted out and completed. the exterior styling has been designed by Redman Whitely Dixon whilst Remi Tessier contributed to the lavish interiors.
Vava II offers six decks for guests to enjoy and reportedly cost around £100million pounds to build. It features 4 luxury tenders stored in garages to transport passengers to and from the yacht where they can plunge into the variable depth pool, or into the sea from the convertible beach club at the aft of the vessel.
Built by Devonport Yachts with a Steel hull and Aluminium superstructure, vava II enters the top 100 largest superyacht list at position number 30, equal with the M.Y. Palladium built by Blohm and Voss in 2010.
Vava II shall be available for charter adhering to SOLAS regulations for large passenger ships, meaning vessels carrying 36 passengers or more. The rules govern things like damage stability and other safety matters. To cater for guests it is estimated more than 30 crew shall be required to navigate, cook, clean and service the vessel. With a range of around 6000 nautical miles this yacht is certainly capable of turning heads in all corners of the world.
Mr Bertarelli, now aged 45, took over the family firm, the multinational Serano pharmaceutical company, 13 years ago after his father’s death. It was then sold to a German company Merck in 2006 for 13.3billion US dollars. In 2008, Mr Bertarelli launched the Ares Life Sciences investment fund, which backed the £670 million buyout of medical services provider Euromedic.
Mr Bertarelli also likes sailing and served on the crew of his Team Alinghi boat, when it won the won the 2003 and 2007 America’s Cup. His £6.8 billion fortune makes him the 81st richest man in the world, the fifth richest in the UK and his British born former Miss UK wife, Kirsty, the richest woman in the country.
