Perth ISAF 2011 April Newsletter

From my office window, I look across the Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour which is always busy, but will be busier still this December. It’s a reminder of what a great attraction Fremantle is to local, national and overseas visitors. Already much of the accommodation in the port city is booked out over the period of the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships.
Add the large number of expected casual visitors to the event and you have a boost to the local economy not seen since the America’s Cup defence back in 1987. It’s an opportunity that local businesses have been quick to appreciate. Not surprisingly, there’s been a growing demand to know more about the World Championships and what they will bring to Fremantle, Perth and WA.
We enjoy close contact with the Fremantle business community and appreciate their strong support. As the World Championships draw closer, we have begun a series of regular briefings to outline our event planning and the concept of staging the world’s biggest sailing regatta together with a Cultural Festival that will make this event attractive to sailors and non-sailors alike.
This month we have met with a range of Fremantle organisations representing a big range of Fremantle businesses. Together with the Fremantle City Council and Fremantle Ports, they have thrown their support behind Perth 2011 and are important partners in ensuring its success. I thank each of them for their support.

Remember, The Dream Begins in Perth!

Spacer City of perth regatta this sunday Spacer

A special date in the Perth 2011 sailing calendar is upon us, with the final City of Perth Regatta taking place on the waters of the Swan River this Sunday 10 April.
The City of Perth Regatta provides local and international sailors with the rare opportunity to sail in the waters off Barrack Square and compete for cash prizes in front of the picturesque Perth City Skyline.
The Regatta is the marquee event of the sixth and penultimate camp in the Perth 2011 Emerging Nations programme.

Entries for the City of Perth Regatta have been open to local athletes since Friday 25 March, giving Western Australian sailors the opportunity to pit themselves against the Emerging Nations athletes.

The City of Perth Regatta starts at 1.30pm, this Sunday 10 April. Entry is free.

The sixth Perth 2011 Emerging Nations programme camp is well underway, with eleven international athletes back in Perth to push their case for selection for the World Championships in December, and possibly for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Under the direction of Olympic gold medallist and Perth 2011 Sailing Coach Belinda Stowell and Olympic and Perth 2011 coach Arthur Brett, the athletes are training out of Fremantle Sailing Club combining both practical and theory workshops to maximise their learning.

This camp is the final ENP before December’s World Championships, and as with previous camps, some of Western Australia’s best local sailors have been training with the international athletes ahead of the City of Perth Regatta on Sunday 10 April.

The timing of the Regatta couldn’t have come at a better time for local talent, providing a good challenge before many of them travel to Europe for a northern summer of sailing.

Deputy Lord mayor John Tognolini will represent the City this Sunday in Perth water for what promises to be an enthralling afternoon.

Perth 2011 is now a feature at West Coast Eagles home games at Patersons Stadium, starting with the Eagles win against North Melbourne in their 2011 home-opener.

The Event Partnership between Perth 2011 and the Eagles will see a Perth 2011 TVC broadcast on the big screen at every West Coast home game in season 2011.

If you’re at an Eagles match this season, in between cheering them on and reflecting upon a bumper first half of football, be sure to turn your attention to the big screen at half time and remind everyone sitting around you what an exciting event perth 2011 will be.

Our thanks to West Coast for their support.

Spacer HMB Endeavour setting sail for Perth 2011 Spacer

The Australian National Maritime Museum is counting the days until its replica of Captain Cook’s Endeavour sets sail on an historic 13-month circumnavigation of Australia.
The voyage will see the 44-metre ship call in at 18 ports around the Australian coast, including Fremantle where it will open to the public from 14 October to 1 November 2011 and then become a centre piece attraction at the Perth 2011 ISAF Sailing World Championships in December.
The museum team is busily preparing for departure with an extensive refit program just completed to ensure Endeavour is in peak condition for the epic voyage. Works included replacing the standing rigging, overhauling the masts and propellers and caulking the topsides. Finally the ship’s hull has been scraped clean, anti-fouled and the whole vessel re-painted.
Endeavour will depart Sydney on Friday 15 April for the first leg of its voyage around Australia. Opportunities still exist to join the adventure as voyage crew or volunteer guides when in port. Spacer Twilight Sail Spacer

Partners at the commercial law firm, Middletons, together with staff and guests, joined athletes and coaches from the Perth 2011 Emerging Nations Program last week for an evening twilight race and barbecue from Royal Perth Yacht Club. Gold sponsor Middletons has been a strong supporter of the ENP, which seeks to bring young athletes from non-tradtional sailing countries up to international standard. It is hoped that many of the 11 present participants in the ENP camp being held in Perth will qualify to sail in December’s ISAF Sailing World Championships.

Six yachts carrying some 60 Middletons staff and guests hosted ENP athletes from countries such as India, Trinidad and Tobago, Colombia and Serbia, together with Perth 2011 ENP coaches Belinda Stowell and Arthur Brett. In contrast to the Olympic class Lasers and RS:X sailboards being sailed at the ENP camp, the young athletes and their hosts were sailing on a fleet of much bigger – match racing Foundation 36s. Arriving back at RPYC after dark, the Middleton’s party and ENP athletes sat down to a barbecue on the club lawn and an evening where the talk was of sailing and ambitions for the coming World Championships.

Middletons’ Partner Simon Salter summed up the evening, saying, “it gives Middletons great pleasure to support the ENP, which is an unprecedented initiative for international sailing. Tonight was a great opportunity to meet the talented ENP athletes from around the world.”
