The Inca Trails is around 27 – 35 miles long depending on your starting point and passes through high mountain desert at elevations of up to 14,000 feet, experiencing cloud forests and to the orchid rich jungle of Machu Picchu. Commence your journey at the Urubamba suspension bridge passing through the settlement of Huayllabamba and view the Llactapata ruins on the way to Llulluchapampa camp. Machu Picchu was previously known to Peruvian farmers until 1911, when Hiram Bingham, an American historian stumbled across it while searching for the lost city of Vilcabamba. Bingham found buildings thickly overgrown with vegetation which in the 1930’s and 1940’s cleared the forest away to unveil the discovery and attempt to solve the Machu Picchu mystery. The site is of such exceptional quality that historians beleive it must at some stage been an important ceremonial centre for the Incan’s.
