Built to RINA classification, the 95’8” (29.2-meter) Ferretti 960 reflects sporty, aggressive styling that is characteristic of Ferretti Yachts. In keeping with features from the Ferretti 870 and 690 range the lowered bulwarks allow sensational views out to sea from the dining area. The styling was provided by Studio Zuccon International Project and Advanced Yacht Technology & Design (AYTD), the Ferretti Group’s in-house research and design team. The beam on this yacht has been stretched out to  6.7 meters) which can be nest appreciated in the massive full beam, main deck master stateroom. Four additional guest cabins are provided on the lower deck, all of equal size and luxuriously appointed.

The RYA, the national body for all forms of boating in the UK, is generally at the forefront of yachting qualifications worldwide and has a strong part to play in advising the MCA and red ensign yachts. Current qualification requirements include:

• All drivers of powerboats need to have their Powerboat Level 2 (cost £300). This is required for any boat up to 10m in length. This includes private as well as commercial yachts and is particularly regulated in France, Italy and other popular yachting destinations.
• All drivers of PWCs (jet-skis and personal water craft) need to have their PWC license (1 day course costing £250). This is required on all commercial vessels but is enforced differently from country to country due to the relative newness of the qualification. This qualification is needed for guests as well as crew who use the watercraft.
• On all vessels with paid crew operating boats 10-24m in length the crew should have their Yachtmasters or International Certificate of Competence.

In order to train guests on charter yachts the RYA offers the opportunity to become an accredited PWC training centre. This means that guests can be trained onboard by instructors prior to using jetskis. For a yacht to gain this accreditation it costs approx. £3000 and is a 4 day course for up to 6 people. Qualified instructors onboard are then able to offer guests a short course (usually a 30-45 minute introductory course) and on gaining their completion certificate guests can then use the PWC’s.

Other yacht toys not covered by the RYA

No license is required to operate Seabobs, inflatable floats, slides and Jetsurfs. However, careful selection of their operating area needs to be made. Increasingly manufacturers are insisting on training on delivery of the more complex yacht toys (e.g. Jetsurf, Jetlev-Flyer, Submarines etc.) by the manufacturer. This is required in order to activate the warranty and is highly recommended in order to use them to their full potential.

Authors note: “Superyachts should only employ qualified crew. With top-end yacht toys and powerboats accidents will and do happen. Only if crews are qualified will insurers pay for any eventual claims. Employing qualified crew not only ensures safety but also guests’ enjoyment on board. Crew should hold a PWC and Powerboat level 2 license when setting up and using tenders or toys and also the STCW95 and ENG1 medical certificate.”

The number of vessels displayed at the Dubai International Boat Show are up approximately 10 per cent on last year indicating a perceived increase in the luxury market place throughout the region. This year more than 26,000 attendees are expected at the show, considered the leading and most established platform in the Middle East for global product launches and yacht launches by the world’s leading brands, attracting a multi million dollar sales record from previous years.

Gulf Craft which is the only maker of superyachts in the United Arab Emirates has also announced the commencement of the largest project to date, a 155-foot superyacht scheduled for completion in 2015. This is 20ft longer than its current longest model.

The demand for private and executive jets in the Middle East is also growing, especially in Arabian Gulf states such as the UAE. Yesterday as the Abu Dhabi Air Expo commenced, a strong turnout of manufacturers and customers convened displaying a confidence in the market and that the global recession was long past. The Expo runs for 3 days over the 5th, 6th and 7th March at the Al Bateen Executive Airport.

Annual sales of overhauled second-hand and new aircraft are expected to double to US$35 billion (Dh128.55bn) by 2030, and the annual global growth rate in the years between 2010 and 2030 will amount to about 4 per cent, according to a study by Roland Berger Strategy Consultants. “Countries like the UAE are driving this growth and will even exceed the region’s growth rate,” said Holger Lipowsky, the project manager at Roland Berger.

Private jet-charter companies are also reporting a rebound. Royal Jet, the Abu Dhabi-based private plane operator said revenues for its Gulfstream aircraft rose 27 per cent last year, while income for its Boeing Business Jets increased 6 per cent.

The M6 is on the verge of being “out there,” with its 20 inch M light alloy wheels, carbon fiber roof, quad exhausts and air intakes that can swallow a small village. Because of all of these performance items, this is not an understated coupe. Yet, all together, the look works, without the risk becoming boy racer-looking.

Once inside, the interior captivates you, with the sumptuous double stitch leather and simple yet elegant layout, the M6 mixes elegance and performance quite nicely. The thick rimmed steering wheel is perfectly sized, offering the full range of switchgear one expects from a performance coupe. There is a configurable head-up display, which is a nice touch. The high-center infotainment screen is large and offers excellent viewing, regardless of the sun angle. Menu navigation is managed by the BMW I-drive system; one that takes a bit to get used to, but once you’ve fiddled for a few minutes, it does become fairly intuitive to use. One thing we always enjoy about BMW automobiles is the wonderful tactile sensation all the buttons and switchgear offer. For me, BMW is the gold standard in this area. Rear seats are more for occasional use, yet comfortable for small people or kids. Trunk is surprisingly large and well appointed. One novel trick is the backup camera placement. Can’t see it? Maybe it would be a good bar bet with your friends to ask them to tell you where it is. Surprise, it’s hidden behind the roundel emblem. BMW’s iconic emblem does double duty as the manual trunk release in addition to being the electrically operated lens cover. I love it!

Touch the start button and the wonderful sound of the V8 resonates with authority. The transmission is an M double clutch system that also has a launch control feature. There is no doubt, the M6 can put the power to the ground, thanks to the incredible level of technology and engineering that is active yet hidden. Driving the M6 is an effortless experience, interestingly enough, several times I noticed that when looking at either the speedometer or the information on the head-up display you begin to doubt if the information is really true. Yes, it’s that fast and that effortless. Cornering is amazingly agile, more so considering the size of this coupe. Stopping is as if the earth stopped rotating, thanks to the wondrous technology of the M Carbon ceramic brakes. Acceleration, especially when the “M” Button is used, is nothing short of breathtaking.

Comparables (if there are any) include: Jaguar XKR-S, Aston Martin Vanquish, Maserati Gran Turismo, Mercedes-Benz CL65 AMG and the Cadillac CTS-V Coupe.

Regrettably, my one week with the mighty M6 came to an end all too quickly. The toughest part was giving back the key after one week and 500 miles of wonderful driving! As it left my driveway, all I could think of was….The M6 makes anything else on the road seem like beige appliances.
