A spectacular fire destroyed a 105-foot yacht at the Seattle Fishermen’s Terminal on Friday, just hours before it was due to depart on a 15-day Alaskan cruise. The harbour patrol boat managed to tow a half-dozen other boats away from the area to protect them from the fire.

The fire call came in at 1:10 a.m., and crews fought the fire with two hoses from shore — each pumping 300 gallons a minute, and a fire boat — pumping 800 gallons a minute. The harbour patrol boat also used fire-suppressing foam in an attempt to extinguish the flames.

“It just couldn’t get that fire knocked down,” said Fire department spokesman Kyle Moore, estimating that flames continued to engulf the yacht until about 5 a.m. It continues to burn this morning and likely will do so for several hours.
The boat’s owner and its engineer were asleep when they heard a popping sound, the fire restricted the exit’s on the boat so the two shimmed down a mooring line to safety.

A 45-foot response boat from Coast Guard Station Seattle is enforcing a 200-yard safety zone around the terminal and assisted in deploying containment and absorbent boom in the area to mitigate impact to the environment.

The boat is the Safari Spirit, part of Seattle-based American Safari Cruises, which operates four yachts on Alaska cruises. According to the American Safari Cruises website, the Safari Spirit was scheduled to leave Friday on a 15-day Alaska cruise from Seattle to Juneau and back.

In 2012 the Asian marine and yachting industry has shown significant growth, Colin Dawson provides an overview of the industry as the boat show season approaches.

As we move into the boat show season in Asia, it is interesting to see how things have changed over the last year in our industry.
Despite the ongoing economic turmoil in Europe and elsewhere in the world, the yacht industry in Asia continues to grow and we are seeing more overseas large yachts visit our shores. It is fair to say that, outside of China, boat sales have slowed in terms of numbers but in terms of quality they seem to be on the increase. This is also reflected in visiting yachts; Phuket has seen one of its busiest seasons in many years, with yachts having to be turned away due to lack of berthing space. This is a problem encountered elsewhere in Asia, and it desperately needs to be addressed if we are to see continued growth of the industry and benefits to the economies where people wish to visit and keep their yachts. The boat show diary for March, April and May has us going back and forth around the region, with each show telling us thatit is the most important in the region, with visitor numbers that makes one’s eyes pop out! These shows, coupled to the Asia Superyacht Conference in Singapore and the fiftieth anniversary of the Rolex China Sea Race, offer a feast of yachting events to choose from in the coming few months. Other events later in the year including a planned superyacht rendezvous in Hong Kong in November which will allow owners and their guests to enjoy their yachts in ways they may not have previously done so. It may even encourage prospective owners to put pen to contract.

International industry visitors will need to choose carefully which shows they attend and only with properly audited visitor numbers can a true reflection of visitor traffic be known. It’s the dealers who really know how successful a show has been, and while many will claim they had dozens of firm leads or certain sales announced, in reality it is the six months following a show that tells if leads were serious and sales made.

The superyacht sector in Europe seems to have settled a bit and while we are still seeing price reductions – some quite significant – things seem to be stabilising. The very large yacht order book (over 70 metres) is now very strong, though it is fair to say that orders in the 40 to 60-metre range are not as healthy as they have been Market openings The growth and potential of the Asian yachting market is now clear to see for the world’s builders, and the broad-based benefits it could bring require an industry voice
in the past. Asia continues to grow and industry players from overseas still see China as the honey pot, though it is fair to say that the rest of the region is as attractive if not more so as a whole. In light of this, the Hainan Rendez-Vous is an increasing must for visitors and the two shows in Singapore along with the conference there must also be very attractive. With a (admittedly) biased view, I am glad that the Asia Pacific Superyacht Association (APSA) will be present at all the major shows in the region in some form, be it with a booth or Members Lounge, or simply with key personnel walking the shows. While still young, APSA is working hard to promote the region as a whole to locally-owned and visiting superyachts, and by working as a team, members of APSA will all gain in some way by unifying the industry to offer all round opinions and expertise in areas than need assistance and improvement.
While it is up to local associations to work on local issues, APSA as a regional association is able to support with regional expertise that will be able to help in local situations. APSA is in the process of creating working groups to tackle real issues, with members forming these groups to really make a difference. It is by working together with the bigger picture in mind that we can achieve what is needed and the industry can grow as a whole. We can offer owners and crew the facilities they need in order to feel relaxed about cruising our fabulous coastlines.

This will surely create jobs and generally improve local economies throughout the region, as money is spent on everything from flowers to fuel and hotels to high-end couture. The mood in the region seems cautiously optimistic for our industry, and with more owners of superyachts looking to grace our shores lets make them welcome and really show how wonderful the Asia Pacific is and what good hosts we can be.

Words by Colin Dawson of the George Group in Hong Kong

Some superyachts have already taken up on the new technology including M/Y Nero, M/Y Big Fish, M/Y Apogee and many others.

Captain Paul Stengel of M/Y Odyssey comments “we found that it helped reduce the amount of soot that would normally be on our hull. Additionally, when we arrived in Shelter Bay Panama, we found it much easier to clean the hull after having the additive GO2 in our fuel.“

At METS in 2011 (Marine Equipment and Trade Show) the product was honored with a DAME award for The Most Eco Friendly Product, and since attending Monaco, Ft Lauderdale and Miami, we have seen a huge increase in inquiries and adoption of the product by very high profile yachts.

Acronautic is very pleased to announce that its design of the Dariel DT13 ‘YOKO’ launched in 2011 has recently been confirmed as a finalist for the 2012 Showboats Design Awards to be held in Monaco, June 2012.

‘YOKO’ is a Dariel DT13 luxury RIB with substantial customisations from Acronautic Ltd to suit the specific requirements of the client. Built by Dariel Yacht in Bergamo, Italy the vessel was designed to achieve functional use as a comfortable dayboat and high speed tender vessel for guest transfers.

Powered by twin 350hp Mercury Verado engines, this craft has the power and agility to offer an exhilarating ride in excess of 50 knots, yet maintain stability, comfort and stay dry through the wide beam and oversized hypalon tubes around the circumference of the vessel. Unique features incorporated into this very special Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) include underwater lighting, Nespresso Coffee machine, large refrigerator, a powerdive 12v snorkelling system and a Clarion Audio System with amplifiers, subwoofers and no less than 4 remotes strategically positioned around the vessel for convenient control.

The equipment for the vessel, specifications and general arrangement was designed by Stephen Crone of Acronautic Ltd, a West Australian yachting professional based in Monaco with over 10 years superyacht industry experience and multiple accolades for design contribution on high speed luxury yachts.

Mr Crone commented on the Yoko design saying; “This vessel was developed for the very specific requirements of the client, every detail was taken into consideration and then refined to exceed expectations. We even measured the client’s favourite sun cream brand and created a specific storage compartment for the SPF range of sun protection.”

In June 2012 the design shall be considered by the judges from Boat International media at the annual 2012 Showboats Design Awards at the prestigious Monaco Opera House .
Movie enthusiasts from all across the world have recently gathered to attend the “Film on the Rocks Yao Noi” film festival in Thailand. Literally on the rocks, The floating cinema creates a totally unique movie experience set amidst the jagged shoreline of Yao Noi. Combining the rugged natural beauty mother nature with the clear blue waters of Nai Pi Lae lagoon on Kudu Island, the German architect behind the project ‘Ole Scheeren’ hoped to offer film buffs a spiritual experience.

The projection screen was nestled between the majestic peaks backdrop of a huge wall of rocks.

Inspired by the construction of floating lobster farms, the Archipelago Cinema was crafted out of wooden frames tied to foam blocks with rubber straps and then wrapped in Mosquito nets. A simple construction technique developed by the local Thais.

Event attendees were transported by boat to their floating seats in the “Archipelago Cinema” built on a large raft out of recycled materials.
Scheeren described the project on Architizer.com as “A screen, nestled somewhere between the rocks. And the audience…floating…hovering above the sea, somewhere in the middle of this incredible space of the lagoon, focused on the moving images across the water: a sense of temporality, randomness, almost like driftwood. Or maybe something more architectural: modular pieces, loosely assembled, like a group of little islands that congregate to form an auditorium.”

Archipelago Cinema is a collaboration between Ole Scheeren and the Film on the Rocks Yao Noi Foundation which is presided by Nat Sarasas, Apichatpong Weerasethakul and Chomwan Weeraworawit.

Peter Snelson
Peter has a natural passion for the sea and has been described as almost obsessive about the seas movements and her qualities. At one sta…ge he lived for four years on his 43 DS Jeanneau on the oceans and seas around Europe. Here he really began to learn about the constant battle that yachts have against the sea and winds understanding what every shackle, rivet or lines purpose was meant for on the vessel. With this depth of knowledge and experience he designed Ocean C Furniture using components and materials that will grace any waters edge. We are confident that you and your customers will enjoy them. The sea is a beast and the sun a killer, so if the structure doesn’t sink first then the ultra violet rays will destroy it in time. Salt is also a very corrosive element and needs attention. Dealing with the anchorage and the extreme jarring motions that certain points are exposed to requires careful consideration. This has been gleaned from years of experience studying the sea and its motions against anchored objects. They say you are as strong as your weakest link and the sea is probably the severest test of this theory.
